Healing children’s fears in and out of the playroom: Heart-centered tools to help children release fear and rebuild confidence by Certified Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor Priya Raghav, LICSW, RPT-S

Workshop length – 3 CE Hours

Biography – Priya Raghav, LICSW, RPT-S is a proud parent of a passionate 9 year old boy. She is a play therapist, a Certified Hand-in-Hand instructor and the founder of ‘Play It Out! PLLC’ and ‘Parent Village LLC’ based in Kirkland WA, collectively offering emotional healing and support to young children and their caregivers. The two biggest pivotal points in her life as a parent and therapist have been finding Child-Centered Play Therapy, and the Hand in Hand ‘Parenting by Connection’ approach. Hand in Hand Parenting gave Priya a framework for trauma-informed, emotion-focused, therapeutic parenting that was transformational in supporting her son’s big emotions and for deepening her relationship with him. Needless to say, it also significantly transformed her work with her client parents in being able to support them better so they can, in turn, support their children better. Hand in Hand’s emphasis on the power of play and listening, and its rootedness in neuroscience principles align well with the current discipline and practice of Play Therapy. Having seen its benefits in her personal and professional work, Priya is eager to share this model with other parents and therapists.

Workshop Abstract – Learn valuable new skills for supporting children and parents in your practice from Hand in Hand Parenting, an award-winning nonprofit organization that has been helping to strengthen families around the world for over 30 years. This workshop will introduce participants to Hand in Hand’s compassionate, emotion-focused, connection-based approach and how it can help children shed fears and move through aggression in intentional ways, to help them heal and lift their confidence.

Hand in Hand’s 5 Listening Tools are grounded in the latest developmental neuroscience and praised by parents and professionals alike for their humanity, simplicity, flexibility and effectiveness. This model is an apt adjunct to a Play therapist’s toolkit as the Hand in Hand tools are rooted in the power of play and listening as means of connecting with children. Play therapists will walk away from this workshop with a helpful framework for thinking about fear and aggression in young children as well as a concrete set of tools to use in the playroom and to share with caregivers.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe how fear and aggression are understood through the Hand in Hand Parenting model.

2. Identify and Apply four trauma-informed connection-based tools to help heal children’s fears and restore their confidence.

3. Demonstrate one listening tool that caregivers and professionals can use to relieve the grip of emotional stress on the mind and body that dealing with fear and aggression can produce.

4. Apply a connection-based framework to engage and empower caregivers to use these emotion-focused caregiving tools in the home.

Priya will be assisted in her presentation by Blake Adams.

Blake lives in Seattle with his wife and 8 year old daughter. He is a certified instructor of Hand in Hand Parenting and in March 2021 will earn his MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from Antioch University, Seattle. Blake recently worked as an intern therapist at a community mental health agency where he successfully integrated the Hand in Hand Listening Tools to help families with young children recover from the effects of trauma. Blake’s favorite things about working with families is seeing how much warmth, playfulness, and flexibility come shining through when parents get the support they deserve. Blake teaches Hand in Hand  Parenting classes, facilitates parent support groups, hosts online events for parents, and provides private consultations. Guided by the belief that parents are good and that support for parenting will change the world, Blake is excited to share Hand in Hand’s Parenting by Connection approach with parents, teachers, therapists, and others who care for children.
