Exploring Gender and Creating Gender-Affirming Space for Play by Jeanette Borunda, MSW, LCSW

Workshop length – 3 CE Hours 

 Biography – Jeanette Borunda, MSW, LCSW.  Jeanette has over 19 years of experience working in the mental health field with people from birth to death through non-profit agencies, hospitals, and government agencies.  She is currently the Mobile Crisis Response Team CIT Clinical Director for the Alamogordo Police Department in Alamogordo, NM.  In her private practice, Jeanette specializes in working with LGBTQ+ youth and adolescents.  She believes in anti-oppressive spaces to create safe learning environments and focuses on healing trauma work, intersections of identities, gender warriors, and military veterans.  Jeanette is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and serves as the Vice President on the National Alliance of Mental Illness-Southern New Mexico (NAMI-SNM) Board of Directors and the Alamogordo Counseling Center’s Board of Directors.  Jeanette has been identified as a member of the group representing Otero County for the New Mexico Summit on Improving the Court and Community Response to Those with Mental Illness Summit and is a Sector Lead for the Otero County Anna Age 8, 100% Community Initiative.  In addition, Jeanette volunteers with the Otero County Juvenile Justice Restorative Committee. 

Throughout her career, Jeanette has facilitated trainings and workshops throughout New Mexico and Washington on topics including Cultural Competency, Race, Class and Gender, LGBTQ+, and Microaggressions.  She has presented at the PSRANM Conference, NM Immigrant Law Center, Santa Fe Community College, Gender Odyssey International Conference, Americorps, and several non-profit agencies throughout New Mexico and Washington.  Jeanette has trained over 200 professionals and community members in Mental Health First Aid and Crisis Intervention Training in Otero County.  While living in Seattle, WA, Jeanette was a trainer for the Seattle Race and Social Justice Committee’s program “Race, Are We Really All That Different?”  She also served on the 2017 Gender Odyssey International Conference POC Advisory Committee and implemented programming for POC at the conference.  Workshop Overview – Youth have been increasingly exploring their gender identity at younger ages and coming out as transgender or gender nonbinary (TGNB).  More gender diversity in media and social media and more accepting environments have been attributed to this increasing number.  Many TGNB adolescents and adults report wanting to experiment with gender, having a bad experience with gender, or being denied their gender as children.  More accepting parents reach out with questions of “what do I do now?”  A safe place for a child to explore gender and gender play begins in our offices.  This presentation will focus on how we can create a more gender-affirming space and give you tools to decrease gender-based oppression that many youth have already faced in their lives. 

Learning Objectives:

Workshop participants will be able to:

1) Implement gender-affirming documentation and neutral language into your practice

2) Identify at least 2 constructs of gender and gender identity development to consider.

3) Engage parents with reassurance or guidance with their TGNB child.

4) Discuss and identify ways in which youth express their gender in play therapy.

4) Implement at least 3 activities that empower, support, and create gender-affirming play.
